SMS API for beginners: what it is and how businesses use it

An API is a way for one piece of software to talk to another. An SMS API lets your own system, such as your website, app or accounting software, send text messages without a person logging in and pressing send.

A simple example

A customer logs in to your app. Your system creates a one-time code and asks QuickPing SMS to send it. A few seconds later the code arrives on the customer's phone. Nobody on your team did anything.

When do you need an API?

If a person sends your messages by hand, the web platform at app.quickpingsms.com is all you need. An API makes sense when messages should be triggered by something that happens in your system:

  • Banks and fintech: OTP codes and transaction alerts.
  • Online shops: order confirmations and delivery updates.
  • Hospitals and clinics: appointment reminders.
  • Logistics: pickup and arrival alerts.
  • Schools: fee reminders and notices pulled from student records.

How sending works

  1. You get a key and a secret. They work like a username and password for your software. Keep them on your server and never put them in a web page or mobile app.
  2. Your software makes a request. It sends the phone number and the message to QuickPing SMS.
  3. You get an answer. It includes a message ID and shows the message is on its way.
  4. You can check the result. Ask for the status using the message ID to see if it was delivered or failed.

What a request looks like

curl -X POST https://api.quickpingsms.com/v1/sms/send \
  -H "X-API-Key: qp_your_key" \
  -H "X-API-Secret: your_secret" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"to": "+233244000000", "message": "Your code is 482913"}'

Your developer will recognise this immediately. If you are not technical, hand this page to them.

Things to plan for

  • Security. Anyone with your key and secret can send messages on your balance, so treat them like a bank PIN.
  • Message length. Long messages are split into parts and billed per part.
  • Failures. Check delivery status so you can retry important messages such as OTP codes.
  • Consent. Marketing messages still need permission, even when sent by software.
